November National Healthy Skin Month

 

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) first implemented November as healthy skin month in order to raise awareness about the importance of keeping skin fresh, hydrated and healthy all year round. There are many things people can do during National Skin Health Month, and all year long, to prevent skin damage, reduce signs of aging and protect one of the most vital organs of the body:

National Healthy Skin Month is a public health and awareness campaign that aims to raise awareness on the importance of having healthy skin. It is also for educating the public about the common skin problems that affect people and how they can be prevented. It also informs the public about how skin cancer can be prevented through simple tips Like

Regular use of sunscreen: sunscreen needs to be applied year-round, not just during the summer months. While the sun’s rays are more powerful in summer, they can still be damaging even in the cloudy, cool conditions of winter. A heavy sunscreen may not be necessary, so apply a moisturizer with SPF.

Eat a healthy diet: What we put in our mouths is just as influential to our skin’s health as what we apply externally. Eating a diet that’s rich in Omega 3s, whole grains and B Vitamins is essential to maintaining skin’s youthful glow. Be sure to incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins in your diet. Since skin is made of protein, the more we consume, the better

Don’t forget your lips and around the eyes: Your lips and eyes need just as much protection as the rest of your skin, especially since they can get a lot of exposure to the sun. Carry lip balm and eye cream with SPF with you and apply it generously particularly in the dry winter months when lips can become very chapped and soar.

Meditation: Stress is a huge contributor to skin problems like acne and wrinkles. Making time to relax during your hectic days can greatly improve the condition of your skin. 10-15 in day make the huge difference in you aver all appearance 🙂

Moisturize: Your skin needs to stay hydrated to stay healthy. Apply moisturizer to your whole body every morning and at night before going to bed. Keep moisturizer near you during the day so you can continue to moisturize your hands. Along with these and many other helpful tips, you can keep your skin looking great all through the month of November and the rest of the year.

Plenty of water: Don’t forget about to drink at last 8 – 10 glasses of water every day. Water flushed out toxins from the body keep the skin breathable and firm.

Avocados

Avocados are filled with antioxidants like lutein and beta carotene, which help to soften the skin and keep it looking supple. Blend avocados with orange juice and garlic to make salad dressings, stir it up with a little cumin and cilantro to make an easy dip, and add it to plant-based alfredo sauce for an extra creamy texture.

Blueberries

This low-profile berry was ranked number one in antioxidant activity by the U.S. Department of Agriculture compared to 40 common fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants in blueberries protect you from premature aging, so add half a cup to your yogurt or cereal every day.

Pomegranates  

The high vitamin content and abundance of tannins in pomegranates promotes food all around health, and they promote smooth skin that is free of fine lines. Juiced pomegranates are super tasty when combined with greens. The juice can be enjoyed as is or blended in smoothies. Pomegranate seeds are awesome in salad too.

Walnuts

Thank to all the B vitamins found in walnuts, you can count on them to act as a natural anti-aging tool for your skin. Their oil works great as a moisturizer too.. Make your own anti-aging taco meat by pulsing walnuts with a little soy sauce, garlic, cumin, and lemon juice in your food processor. Walnuts are also delicious blended or stirred into both raw and cooked soups.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain an excellent source of lycopene, which may just help protect your skin from sun damage so it stays smooth and young looking as you age. To activate the lycopene benefits of your tomatoes, it’s important to cook them a little. Simmer them in a soup or bake a few to blend into a luxurious tomato hummus. You can also kick your salsa up a notch by fire roasting a few tomatoes to add to your fresh salsa mix.

Kale

You have seen kale touted as an antioxidant king no doubt, but do you know that’s it a skin care queen too? The abundance of vitamin A found in kale promotes proper skin cell growth and helps to keep your skin fresh and alive. Wilt your kale in a bath of lemon juice, garlic salt, and jerk seasoning for a fantastic side dish, or juice it with your favorite fruits.

Kiwi

The nutrient rich kiwi contains high amounts of vitamin E, which is a natural skin moisturizer and rejuvenator. Delicate kiwi is also an excellent source of dietary fiber that aids in ridding the body of toxins. Juice kiwi, add it to a fruit salad, or dice it up and top your salads with it.Kiwi is also excellent paired with strawberries and coconut whipped cream for dessert!

Pumpkin

Bright pumpkins have it all – vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Potassium and vitamins A and E are just a handful of key players when it comes to pumpkins benefiting your skin health.Pumpkin can be eaten in pie of course, but it is also tremendously tasty spiralized for pasta dishes, and pureed into soups and dips. Try dehydrating pumpkin chips for a fun afternoon snack.

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers contain tons of vitamin C that fights free radicals and keeps skin looking youthful. They also have anti-inflammatory properties that keep you from looking bloated, which always is a score. Use bell peppers are crudités paired with hummus or a roasted sweet pepper dip. Stuff your favorite colored bell peppers with quinoa, wild rice, or even stuffing – talk about yum.

Dark Chocolate

We won’t judge you if you keep a secret stash of chocolate in your purse or desk (or both). In fact, we recommend you do — especially if you’re willing to share. Dark chocolate helps skin stay hydrated and protects skin from sun damage, and contrary to popular belief, chocolate does not cause acne. Before you make a mad dash to Godiva or Ghirardelli, however, keep in mind that the best kind of chocolate has a high flavanol content and should be at least 60 percent cacao.

Yogurt

One cup of low-fat yogurt has more calcium than a cup of fat-free milk, which is great for your posture, nails, and teeth. Mix it with fruit or granola for a healthy breakfast or that essential mid afternoon snack.

Sweet Potatoes

You should be eating this super food more often than just at Thanksgiving. Sweet potatoes are packed with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that fights aging. Try them cut up and roasted with herbs or onions for an easy, awesome side.

Everything in our environment directly affects the skin and has an impact on its look and health. Environmental toxins and stresses can all have a negative impact.  The alternative aspect of medical esthetics is so important, because beauty is from the inside out. I want to clients to not only look better, but live and be better. With 10+ years of hands-on experience as an esthetician, I am well-versed in the tricks of the trade. I have advice on everything from your face wash to night care of your skin. Many people have confession; I do have a history of skin habits I’m not so proud of. So on the demand of clients and my profession, I try my best to educate my clients to find out about their skin care secrets, their past skin care sins (bad habits). These are most common confession from most of the clients:

 SKIN CARE SINS (past bad habbits)

  1. “During my high school years in the late ’80s, I worked at a drugstore that sold tabletop suntan lamps. Since I was always trying to get away from being so ghostly pale, I gladly embraced the lamp in hopes of getting a deep, dark tan. Did you know that it’s possible to get severe sunburn and painful, oozing blisters from a lamp? Well, it is and I have. Ouch. Cause: Premature aging and scaring and chances of Basal cell melanoma.

“When I was 18, I occasionally used tanning beds, which have UVA rays that cause premature lines and wrinkles. Luckily, I soon learned the error of my ways and now want nothing to do with tanning of any kind.”

  1. “I smoked cigarettes as a teenager, but I gave them up for a New Year’s resolution one year and never touched them again”. My skin can definitely thank me for that! “  Did you know
  • A smoker’s skin can appear slightly gray because capillaries are dying and closing off, which reduces blood supply and oxygen?
  • Smokers  tend to have increased blackheads that appear on the tops of the cheeks, sides of the nose, upper lip and forehead (areas where the smoke accumulates).
  • Smokers will also experience increased wrinkling, especially on the cheeks and mouth, and under-eye puffiness from collagen damage.
  1. Picking/ squeezing Blemishes.“I used to be a terrible picker.”Now actually I am paying in present to do what I love — picking!” Do you know? Picking leads to terrible scarring and it only makes blemishes worse.
  2. Not Getting Enough Professional Skin Treatments.I recommend people get monthly facials, but with my busy schedule, sometimes I just can’t make it happen. I don’t always have the “me time” I want, generally I never skip my professional facial but if I skip a professional facial, I make sure to do a mini-facial at home (contact aura skin care laser for mini facial kit)

Everybody need at least one professional treatment in a month for skin specially face and neck to slow the aging signs.

  1. Not Protecting Hands From The Sun.“I have to admit that I’m not always good at remembering to put sunscreen on the tops of my hands before driving in the car, even though they are exposed to the same damaging UV rays as my face”. Wearing sun protection is essential for all exposed areas, since the number-one cause of premature skin aging (wrinkles, rough texture, brown spots) is unprotected sun exposure.

Now that those bad habits are out of the way, here are some important skin care rules I live by and I encourage my clients and readers to do the same.

SOME OF THE SKIN CARE RULES

  1. Avoid Sunlight In Airplanes.
  2. Use sunscreen and Reapplying at least every 2 hours.
  3. Increase Blood Circulation.Healthy skin has good blood flow. To achieve this, do some exercises to strengthen your facial muscles and improve your blood circulation.
  4. Limiting Dairy Intake.Although there is not much scientific evidence to back it up, I’ve found that dairy causes more acne . Many, many of my clients have also come to the same conclusion over the years. So learn to limit your dairy intake.
  5. Keep in touch with skin care professional on regular basis. Because your esthetician can keep records for your past and presents changes in your skin and advise you to how to handle the environmental, aging and hormonal fluctuation impacts on your skin.
